When should you consider HVAC replacement?
Age alone does not decide it. ENERGY STAR recommends considering replacement when an air conditioner or heat pump is more than about 10 years old, a furnace or boiler is more than about 15 years old, repairs are frequent, energy bills are rising, or rooms are consistently too hot or cold. An onsite diagnosis and proper system sizing remain essential.
Installation quality matters. ENERGY STAR notes that improper HVAC installation can reduce system efficiency substantially, which is why we encourage homeowners to ask about sizing, ductwork and installation—not just equipment brand.
